Jungnickel Guesthouse

Jungnickel Guesthouse is a place where hearts are warm and where they go the extra mile to provide a pleasant stay. Jungnickel is located in Kimberley, the City of The Big Hole. The warm colours of this area are reflected in the website menu bar and the photo banner at the top of the page tells an immediate story about the establishment and surroundings.

The green for the fonts are picked from the green water in the big hole and the slate grey walls of the hole is reflected in the selected menu item. The beautiful biscuit brown of the gravel road on the right is reflected in the menu bar. The main font was chosen to portray the Victorian style character and the sans font is modern and light.

The footer background is borrowed from the old website and the new main background is borrowed from the Ruby website. Therefore something borrowed and something new, both reflecting the mining theme and Victorian era of Kimberly.

On the home page the ‘less is more’ concept is followed and simple icons are used to inform the page visitor in an instant about the main facilities available. Most people will see the WiFi icon and move on to the Reservations page. The gallery and guest book pages use ‘old polaroid’ look-alike panels for photos. The pages are mildly mouse-interactive with CCS3 to let it feel alive.

The site was hand-coded from the ground up in HTML5 and CSS3. PHP is used to implement re-used partials for the menu, header and footer. The booking form is validated with PHP and transmitted to the guest and Jungnickel with PHPMailer. The site flows very well on mobile devices and for small screens the most important links are visible. Full browsing is available in the site map on the footer for all devices. Next time you visit Kimberley, you know exactly where to stay.

Crystal Cottage

Crystal Cottage is a very comfy and secure nest set in the very heart of Kommetjie village. This charming and unusual, gay friendly, fully self-catering holiday cottage is fully alarmed with secure off street parking. Visitors have their own remote and intercom system. Crystal Cottage has double volume ceilings and comprises of a beautiful bedroom complete with a French shower. A comfortable relaxing TV lounge with DStv, PVR and ADSL. A compact kitchen well equipped with all appliances and an outside patio with barbeque facilities.

This is a sleek new one-pager website using the Parallax One theme from ThemeIsle. The initial website is simple to get on air. Afterwards, most of the time is spent getting the content prepared and entered into the various pages. The colours chosen are subtle and match the atmosphere and beach theme of Crystal Cottage. This theme is very mobile friendly and looks great on a smart phone. For travellers it is important to be able to access a mobile friendly website in order to extract the most important information they require to book and an accommodation establishment.

The website allows for simple online bookings by sending an email to the host of the guest house. To confirm a booking and the cost of the accommodation, the hostess simply needs to tap reply on her email client. A unique advantage of a WordPress website is the facility to update it online. The hostess is also able to add content with a publisher account.

The less-is-more approach is prevalent for this website. Too much information will only let the visitor go elsewhere. The image gallery is used to say as much as possible about Crystal Cottage in an instant. A website like this can be delivered in one week if all the necessary images and content is available. Note the subtle icons at the bottom of the initial page, linking to the different travel sites where Crystal Cottage is registered.

Square Bookmarks is our long-term public project for the Internet. We created it for ourselves to serve as a productivity tool and decided to go public with it. In the early days of the internet when bookmark synchronization for browsers and proper search engines were not around, we kept a local page handy with links to access most frequently used websites. A certain teenager came up with the idea of Squares. Why not keep a public page with squares for the websites, then you can reduce the clutter and have something colourful on your desktop? After all, this is the era of the logo.
